The 96th American Academy of Optometry Annual Meeting kicks off next week, and Elektron Eye Technology will be heading to Chicago to exhibit, learn and network. The event, which takes place between 11 and 14 October, is one of the most comprehensive meetings for optometrists – featuring over 175 exhibitors, essential CE courses, updates on cutting-edge research and valuable networking too.
We’ll be on Stand 258 between 11and 13 October demonstrating our MPS II and Henson range. We’re also running a special promotion for US-based optometrists during the event – 20% off any device purchased during the show, with 10% of orders placed by October 31, 2017.
Course highlights from Academy 2017
The show’s organisers encourage you to “find inspiration for excellence” and this is certainly reflected in the course line-up for the event. To help you get the most from your visit, we’ve handpicked a list of talks and courses that must not be missed.
Mental health considerations for the optometrist, Fraser Horn
October 11, 4-5pm
An important area that can often be overlooked in Optometry is mental health, it’s a topic we’ve recently covered on our blog, and we’re pleased to see it on the agenda at Academy 2017. This course will cover common mental health conditions that an optometrist will find in their practice, how to identify signs of illness and how to approach the topic with patients. If this is an area of interest to you, do make time to go to another talk on the topic too, “recognizing and identifying the psychosocial impact of vision loss” which takes place on October 13 between 4-5pm.
Age-related macular degeneration – current concepts and future directions, Jay Haynie
October 11, 1-3pm
Are you concerned about AMD? In 2014 1.75m Americans had advanced AMD, with the number expected to be 2.95m by 2020. Jay Haynie, OD will be looking at our current approaches to detection and management and what we must do to protect people’s future eye health. An important course to prepare you for the coming challenges.
Keys to preventing vision loss in glaucoma, Austin Lifferth, Andrew Rixon
October 12, 1-2pm
50% of vision loss can be prevented. With regular screening and good awareness-raising campaigns, more people’s sight can be preserved. This course is an important session for any optometrist looking to improve their approach to the detection and management of glaucoma.
Primary eye care with a global focus, Eileen Gable
October 12, 10-11am
Optometry isn’t just about serving your local community, but also how your work can have an impact nationally and even globally. This public health course will address the vast differences in available eye care across the world and how optometrists can support worldwide efforts to improve eye care and prevent the spread of eye diseases.
These four courses are just a small snapshot of the wide variety of education on offer at the conference, there’s so much to take away from this event. Go to the Academy’s website to see the full agenda and plan your visit to Chicago.
The Academy Exhibits – meet the team
The Academy event also features a fantastic exhibitor hall, with over 175 companies on hand to help you improve your practice and invest in the best new equipment, offering everything from technical support to product demonstrations.
The Elektron Eye Technology team will be there, on Stand 258, demonstrating our macular pigment screener (MPS II) and Henson range of perimeters. Visit us October 11-13 to have all your questions answered about why our equipment is an excellent choice when screening for glaucoma and AMD risk. Busy schedule? Get in touch to book a meeting slot.
This Academy meeting is particularly exciting for us as we’ll be launching the Henson range of perimeters in the USA. Tried and tested in the UK, with over 50% market share amongst UK optometrists, we’re now bringing the unique capabilities of the Henson 7000 and 9000 to the USA, so you can detect and manage glaucoma with speed and accuracy. Come and visit us to chat about your practice. We’re also offering 20% off all devices ordered by US-based optometrists during the show.
We’ll also be offering 20% off our popular MPS II. As we’ve seen from the Academy’s academic programme, the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration is a critical issue, so why not arm your practice with the tools to tackle it proactively? Learn more about the MPS II and how macular pigment screening can diversify your services, protect your patients and grow your business by speaking to a member of our team.
Networking opportunities – making the most of Academy 2017
To complete your visit, why not take part in networking? There are several events where you can meet your peers, exchange ideas and leave with a fresh perspective on your work.
To begin your visit, go along to the opening of the Exhibit Hall from 4-6pm on the 11 October, the informal welcome reception is sure to be an excellent place for networking. If you’re a student or resident there are plenty of tailored events for you too – the Student Networking Lunch on the October 13, 11.30-1pm looks to be particularly valuable and a good way to make new friends in the industry.
New for 2017 is the Annual Fellowship Banquet, held to celebrate the new fellows and diplomates of the Academy. Held on the last day of the event (October 14 7-10pm), it’s a fun way to network and celebrate a successful show.
The Academy meeting is sure to be a valuable, interesting and relevant show for all those in Optometry, and we’re excited to be joining you there. Do get in touch to set up a meeting with us, or just come along to our stand to say hello.
